Restoration of Emu
The 1926, W. J. Yarwood and Sons built motor boat Emu has just arrived at Sheet
Stores Basin ready for Paul and Barry to begin restoration of her. When built in
1926, Emu was owned by the well known carrying fleet, Fellows, Morton and
Clayton Ltd and had the fleet number 18.
Due to the decline of carrying traffic, Emu passed into the ownership of British
Waterways, then soon after, Willow Wren who renamed her Tern. She continued
carrying cargoes for a number of years before being used as a camping boat.
When Emu/Tern got sold into private ownership she was converted to a liveaboard
and in recent years got neglected. The current owner, Michael Pinnock, purchased
Emu in July 2009 and on the 28th January she was brought up to Long Eaton on a
low-loader for the restoration to begin.
Emu is being restored back to as near original as possible so that she can
continue carrying cargo when possible, the work will include, re-bottoming, new
cabin, running gear etc.
